Author Spotlight; Hayley Mitchell

Hayley released her first book Because I Was Lonely in March 2017. This post aims to showcase her novel and urge a call to action for book reviewers.

If you are reading this and wish to review her book, then Hayley wants to know.

In fact if you know of any book reviewers, then it would be very much appreciated if you could throw them the this link and let them decide if my hard sell can persuade them to step forwards and help the author out. Not that reviews are everything; then again…of course they are!

Here’s my effort to cajole you into thinking this book is well worth a read. Facebook users beware. As the saying goes, “The grass is always greener on the other side.” Or is it?

The Blurb

Meet Rachel. She is caught in a spiral of endless crying, dirty nappies, and sleepless nights. She fears for her sanity and the safety of her children.

She’s lonely.

Meet Adam. Suffering from the pain and trauma of a terrible accident that he blames himself for, he stays at home, unable to bring himself to leave the house.

He’s lonely.

So when Rachel and Adam rekindle their long lost friendship online, what starts as a little harmless flirtation, soon becomes an unhealthy obsession, and slowly the threads of their lives unravel before them.

Four lonely people . Two unhappy marriages . One dangerous, but inevitable climax.

Former school friends, separated in time and different lives that go wrong, are reunited on social media. A journey taken though loneliness and events that leave them isolated and feeling unloved. Depressed minds seeking something that could disrupt the lives of two families. Initially a friendly reunion that soon becomes an obsession… A gripping read using a common social network. Will you ever look at your spouse online in quite the same way again?

The book starts with exploring each of the four main characters, cleverly showing their individual foibles and motivations; presenting us with real reasons why they are susceptible to looking for happiness outside marriage. Whether they do or not begins to unfold in the latter half where they begin to come together. I make no apology for saying this was not really my genre because it isn’t. But as my bookshelf on GoodReads says; this has dropped into my Unexpected Gems folder.

Well worth a read and… must not forget the call to action for reviewers. If you want to do that then drop me a comment and I will link you up with Hayley or use one of the social media tags at the bottom (Twitter or message her Facebook page).

Hayley Mitchell spends most of the time writing books in her head and was finally able to put finger to keyboard and capture some of the words in the form of her debut novel Because I Was Lonely. A Law graduate she has spent most of her life working with people and much of her career as an advice worker for charities. Always fascinated by people and their relationships she began to write fiction. She is very lucky to live in Wiltshire with her husband, whose support has been invaluable and their two children who amuse, inspire and exhaust her everyday. She is now writing her second novel.

  1. This does sound interesting, and relevant for readers today. I’m working on a beta read for another writer at the moment. But, I think Hayley’s work sounds good and the cover art is beautiful.

    1. Its certainly on topic re social media and where it can lead if the grass looks greener somewhere else! I’m told she is working on another book too (no pressure Hayley).

Thanks for checking it out Angela. Always appreciate your supportive comments x

    1. Thanks Marj; its certainly on trend with social media “anitics.” Will be dropping some of these into your group now too 🙂

      1. I have a spotlight going live tonight so I will try popping that one onto your group either tomorrow or Wednesday. Very appropriate because the person it is for is also a group member so hopefully it will cheer her up too 🙂

          1. It’s my good friend Lucy Brazier. Author of PorterGirl. SHe told me the sequel is due out in June so I said I’d do a coming soon annexed to spotlighting her first book and then do a follow up when The Vanishing Lord comes out proper 🙂

              1. Love coincidences and this is definitely up there now lol. Have you seen any of the post Brexit Dystopia on her blog yet? That’s a bit of a hoot too 🙂

    1. Thanks Denzil. Its certainly a well written read on a topic everyone thinks is happening, but rarely says anything!

    1. Plenty of minds in the wrong places and given the tool of FB to find greener grass…as it were!
I’ve another spotlight lined up shortly; just got to get in touch with the author 🙂

    2. Hi Niki
I hope it is a great read 🙂 It’s a bit tough getting the reviews though! On one hand you need them on the other you wan to hide in the cupboard in case they are bad !!!

      1. Awww I can only imagine. I’m about to launch my book and have designated my mom as my review reader. If they are constructive I want to read them. I can handle constructive criticism but I don’t want to entertain bashing out negativity. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but from product to service reviews, people are generally quick to complain and slow to compliment (unless they’re an affiliate) 😉 I’m wishing you many honest reviews that are helpful and constructive. I know it’s hard putting ourselves out in that way. It’s very brave of you. I’m going on a trip in a couple of moths. I’ll get the book to read on my long international flight and review it. If you haven’t seen Brene Brown’s Ted Talk, I recommend it. If you have, it might be a good time to re-watch it. She has two, watch the oldest one first.

This video is actually perfect for that feeling you have.

        💖💖💖 Niki

        1. Ooops it seems Gary doesn’t allow links in comments. I had linked to a video you can find using this title on YouTube “Brene Brown: Why your critics aren’t the ones who count” it’s uploaded by 99U. 💖💖

          1. You can block links in comments? I never knew that so it must be some default setting. Will look into it on the theme change Niki. Thanks for the head s up 🙂

              1. Indeed it is! I’ve just googled Fictionisfood (not logged in) and the video comes up and plays. Try that and see if you can view it not logged in?

                1. It’s me, it’s me! I was on my phone and neither the link nor the video shows but I’m on my laptop now and it’s there… 😮

        2. Hi Niki

Thank you for the link I will have a look at it 🙂 although I’m writing this after having my first one star on Good reads. It had to happen at some point, although a review would have been useful as I have no idea why they didn’t like it. But hey ho it’s happened and i’m kind of relieved it’s over lol although i hope it doesn’t set a trend.

You must be very excited to have your book coming out, when is it released? I ‘d love to have a read so let me know. It would also be fantastic to have your opinion of my characters 🙂

          Thanks again 🙂 x

          1. You know, my mind goes to one of two places with that 1 star. Either it happened by accident (lord knows I’ve clicked without meaning to) or it’s just not worth entertaining the rating. I know it stings but they weren’t even constructive. You definitely have to watch the video stat because Brene will help you put this into perspective!! Sneak away for 20 minutes and watch it. Trust me.

It’s set to release on Monday 🙈 I’m sure Gary will announce or share something as he’s been a huge help and revealed my cover a few weeks ago. I’ll definitely be reading and reviewing it soon. 💖💖💖

            1. Thanks Niki. I bet you are so excited about tomorrow best of luck 🙂 Where can we buy it ? If you wan to follow me on twitter if you tag me in I’m happy to RT. Give me a nudge if I forget!! I’m currently someone called Sarah so a bit vague ( novel number two).

I loved your natural light photography btw, I do a fair bit of photography as well, love photographing bands so flat is not popular. The light wherever you took the photo’s is fantastic.

              1. I am! I just released it not long ago! Oh my gosh, I’m incredibly excited and also relieved. It was my first time and man did I put some time into getting everything to convert the way I wanted. I added images to my book so that made converting the file interesting for a first time self-publisher. It’s available on Smashwords and Amazon. I don’t want to link here because honestly, I wasn’t trying to talk about my book on your post. I just wanted to share how I planned to handle reviews.

Is the Twitter account tied to your blog the correct account you currently use? If not, here’s my handle @NikiMeadowsWA

So glad I have time to read now that I’m done with the hectic last steps of the process. I look forward to reading about this dynamic Gary did a great job of highlighting.

Thank you. I love all kinds of photography but natural lit candids are my favorite! Thank you, not sure which session you saw but I’m a sucker for golden hour so there’s a 90% chance that’s the lighting I used 🙂

                1. Niki, if you want a follow up with all the links to the source points let me know and I’ll do an Out Now post too 😊

                  1. Actually, by linking to the book page on my website you’re already linked up! I added it there along with the cover reveal you did. I appreciate your ongoing support 💖

                    1. True, but if I actually follow it up then I can re-expose the release in several places plus the networking tags. I’ve got another two spotlights coming up, but I could slot another in for you in a couple of weeks if you are up for it 😊

                    2. If it’s something you’re able to work in I would be very grateful so long as it’s not over stretching you or taking away from your own endeavors. I really appreciate all that you’ve done 💖💖

                    3. I think I can squeeze it in Niki; might be next week though now! Will get in touch for some info later this week 🙂

  2. Thank you so much Gary for this fantastic post 🙂 Rubbish blogger that I am I only just found my password so that I could comment !!

And thank you all for your lovely comments… I am totally pants at social media, it’s way out of my comfort zone so I am so grateful for all the help I have been getting. 🙂

    1. My pleasure Hayley 🙂 Social media is possibly a skill I often underestimate having! Hope the improvised header graphic was OK too. I’ll be shunting this out to other places this week to try and keep it in circulation. Probably hit the #SundayBlogShare too where I’m confidant it will find Twitter and StumbleUpon. Hopefully it will help 🙂

      1. I think I might have finally worked out that I can reply to each comment!! Much better at the social media than I am lol. Thank you so much for your help 🙂

  3. This is what friends do – we support 🙂 Nice shout out for Hayley. Your’re a good friend Gary 🙂

I read Hayley’s book when it was first published on Amazon and found i’d rather read her book than do chores lol

    1. Thanks Helen; bit of a new venture this spotlight thing and a good side-line supporting other authors. Get a shake on and I’ll do yours 🙂 I hope this post did her book justice too!

    2. Thank you Helen and yes friends supporting each other is certainly a lifeline. Gosh , you read my book when i bunged it on Amazon. Thank you 🙂 It’s had a good edit since then and about 5 rounds of proofreads lol. If you get chance could you pop a review on Amazon for me? That would be so helpful 🙂

    1. Very much on trend; dangerous this social media thing lol. Thanks for popping over Samantha; really appreciate you comments 🙂

    1. Thank you so much Ritu. Really appreciate that as I’m considering more spotlights so it not only helps Hayley, but also my reaching out too. Really can’t thank you enough #GaTu

    1. One can’t give too many spoilers away in a review!! You are right though; its a wonderful achievement and quite inspiring given my find a publisher predicament 🙂

    1. Lol…very kind of you Ritu. Hopefully you’ll also find it an incredible story based on modern social media and the darker side of its usage!
